How does participation in interactive music and movement affect a child’s school readiness?
Physical:
These interactive music and movement activities are highly active and engaging. The children are constantly on the move as they hop like frogs, fly like Super Kids, slither like snakes, scuttle like crabs and fly like birds. The children are participating in call and response movement songs and activities such as “body echoes” (in English and in Spanish), Kye Kye Kule (African children’s song), Five Pterodactyls and others. This interactive music and movement program has a strong emphasis on physical activity.
Social/Emotional:
These interactive music and movement sessions create a vibrant space for children’s social and emotional development. As they sing, move like animals, and play hand percussion instruments, children engage in group cooperation and creative expression. Through rhythm games, musical storytelling, and imaginative play with shakers, drums, bells, scrapers, and triangles, they learn to support one another, listen deeply, and collaborate toward shared musical goals.
Language Development:
Music is perhaps the most powerful tool that we have to enhance language development in children. Children retain language that they are exposed to in songs and musical activities at a much higher rate than in many other activities. When the interactive movement element is added to music the rate of language development is even greater. Simply put, children experience language in a more impactful way when they are moving along with the songs and stories.
Cognitive:
Active involvement in music provides opportunities to practice many important academic and pre-academic skills. Engagement in music is all about sound awareness and exploration, and strengthens the same areas of the brain associated with reading and language skills. There is also a relationship between musical training and math skills. Literacy is strongly connected to sound patterns, or phonological awareness. Music engagement builds spatial reasoning skills, pattern awareness, and counting skills.
